Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word “yuj” that literally means to “integrate or to unite”. Yoga is Indian origin, a knowledge that is about 5000 years old. Yoga is about connecting the body with mind and breath by various asanas, meditations, and breathing exercises.
Pranayama – Breathing exercises
Our mind is the light and our body is like a wick of a candle. Then we have prana – the vital force of energy in our subtle layers. The prana keeps us alive physically and nourishes our mind. Pranayama is formed with two words “prana+ayama”, wherein “prana” means “the universal vital force of life” and “ayama” means “to regulate”. So pranayama means working with prana.
An aura – that is the energy field of our body is created by the prana. This prana is channelized through our nadis and the chakras – our energy centers. Our state of mind can be judged by the flow of the quality and the quantity of the life force energy – the prana.
The mind is calm, enthusiastic and positive if the level of prana is high and it is smooth, continuous and a steady. Lack of attention to the breathing pattern due to lack of knowledge can lead to a jerky broken flow of prana making the nadis and chakras blocked fully or partially. Resulting in an increase in fear, worries, conflicts, tension, uncertainty and even negative qualities. Any problem surfaces physical level only after when it is generated on the subtle levels. Our pranic body – the prana shows up sickness much before it is detected or get sick physically.
- Pranayama enhances and increases the quality and the quality of prana.
- Pranayama expands our aura, heightens our spirits and clears all blockages of chakras and nadis of our body.
- Pranayama keeps us healthy physically and mentally and helps the clarity of mind.
- Pranayama harmonizes our body, mind, and spirits and makes us strong spiritually, mentally and physically.
- Pranayama makes one feel positive, enthusiastic and energetic.
Yoga incorporates us emotionally and spiritually. Yoga is a science that connects the body, mind and the soul. A generates a considerable difference in the thoughts, attitude and the behavior. Practicing yoga regularly adds awareness, intuition, sensitivity, and tranquillity.
Our mind keeps swinging like a pendulum, past to future, happiness to sorrow, anger to fear, regret anxiety and so on. Yoga asana brings equanimity. Yoga asanas are much more than merely a physical workout.
Yoga sutras Patanjali says “Sthira Sukham Asanam” which means “a balance of effort and ease”. Yoga asana brings balance to every aspect of our life. We put effort and relax. It teaches us to put effort and get detached from the result. It expands our mind and increases physical flexibility.
